If you’re one of the millions who received a Nook or Kindle for Christmas, you’re probably looking for books to load on it. Because the world of e-books is still new, it can take some digging to find your favorite titles in your e-reader’s format. It can also be frustrating that some e-books cost just as much as their physical copies.

I suspect that in a few years, with the help of the free market, e-books will evolve and become more widely available, much more affordable, and more universally adapted to all e-readers. Until then, here are some suggestions for the best horse books available in e-book format and how to find free horse e-books.

War Horse for Kindle | for Nook

Finding Free E-books
It can take some time to find free e-books that are worth reading. There are a lot of very old, out-of-print books available in e-book format, but many aren’t all that interesting unless you’re looking for very specific information, like how to train mid-19th century cavalry horses.

Open Library is a good resource for quality books, but many are in DAISY format, which can be accessed only by those qualified for the National Library Service DAISY program. Many other books on Open Library are in ePub format, which is more difficult to transfer to a Kindle. (To read an ePub file in your Nook, check out these instructions.)

Many Books also lists older titles as free e-books, including classics like Valley of Wild Horses by Zane Grey and Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. On the upper right corner of each book’s description page is a drop-down list with all the different e-book file formats you can download.

Your local library probably carries e-books and may even have both Kindle and Nook e-books. Search for a public library near you. You can also sign up to receive emails from your local library when they add new e-books.
