foal. |
According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word foal comes from the Old English word fola meaning “young horse,” which is probably descended from the word pulo, meaning “young of an animal” in an ancient language from about 5,500 years ago that was probably the ancestor of all European languages. Pulo may be descended from the root pau meaning “few, little,” as in the word paucity.
